Day 6 at COP29
On Saturday, Day 6 of COP29 in Baku, significant discussions took place regarding the essential implementation of climate adaptation strategies among member states. Delegates from Bangladesh, Malawi, and the Philippines underscored the critical importance of enhancing resilience in vulnerable communities at the recent climate conference. They highlighted the urgent need for substantial financial support to underpin effective climate action initiatives. By sharing their experiences and challenges, these nations called for a collaborative approach to strengthen adaptive capacities and safeguard livelihoods against the increasingly severe impacts of climate change. Their collective message emphasised that without adequate funding and support, efforts to combat climate vulnerabilities would remain severely limited, jeopardising the future of those most at risk.
A prominent theme of the day revolved around the necessity of fostering genuine collaboration between government bodies, private sectors, and civil society organizations to ensure the development of comprehensive and effective climate solutions that can be sustained over time. The session concluded with a renewed and profound sense of urgency to mobilize necessary resources and secure unwavering commitment for adaptation efforts in the face of increasingly severe environmental challenges.
Protests at COP29 have faced significant restrictions, raising concerns over freedom of expression and the right to assemble. Protests and marches were confined to inside the venue at Baku Stadium, a stark contrast to the march in Glasgow in 2021, although similar to the previous two COPs held in the UAE and Egypt.
